Label Claims Decoded

Do bread labels actually matter?

"Multigrain." "Made with whole grains." "Wheat." "12-grain." Bread has more healthy-sounding words than anything — and most hide the same white flour. 🍞

The one thing

Flip the loaf over and read the FIRST ingredient. "Whole wheat flour" (or whole [grain] flour) = the real deal. "Enriched flour," "wheat flour," "unbleached flour" = refined, no matter what the front says.

On the package

Tap a claim to see what it does and doesn't tell you.

The honest bottom line

The whole game is one move — read the first ingredient. 'Whole wheat/grain flour' first = higher-fiber real deal; 'enriched/wheat/unbleached flour' first = refined.

Multigrain, 'wheat,' made-with-whole-grains, and brown color can all be white bread in a nicer outfit.

Gluten-free = a medical need, not a health halo.

Something interesting

A loaf can be seven grains, wheat, AND brown, and still be white bread the whole time. "Multigrain" and "wheat bread" are two of the most convincing words in the store — and neither means whole grain.
